It’s because you only take shallow breathes and didn’t get enough preparation before you started singing. Next, some of these are also words at the end of a phrase, you don’t have enough breath to stay on the right pitch so you went off. It’s because youhave wasted some of your breaths (sounding husky) at the beginning of the phrase
- Suppressing your voice and force to do crescendos at the end of every note. (0:34 – 0:37) You pushed your voice since you think that you were not loud enough right? But this hurts your vocal cords harshly. You should trying to sound rounder and open up the area of the back jaw (the area where your throat and your mouth connect) but not suppressing it and make yourself sound all shrill and piercing.
- Wrong phrasing. (1:05 - 1:07) You breathed at the wrong place and cut the phrase. You should get better prepared before you sing the phase. (0:56 – 0:58) You should learn to use less breath to sing in order to remain some for the later parts of a phrase.
- Weird transition. (0:52 – 0:53) Its very obvious that you recorded the phrases separately. But at this point, there is a ‘click’ in the middle of a phrase which makes it very akward.
- Unstable high notes (1:11 – 1:18) You should be able to hear yourself shaking and trembling (Not vibrato, it’s a different thing). I suggest you to learn to sing from your diaphragm. Take deep breaths, as low as possible, and wait until you feel like you’re ready, imagine the correct pitch and way of the phrase, sing on the voice, and you can be as good as IU!!!! :D

Thanks for the critique Jasmine! I know that breat support (and pitch once I get out of my comfort range) is one of my main problems... I was wondering if you knew any breathing exercises I could try? Also, the awkward phrasing at 1:05 - 1:07 was because there were high notes coming, and I had to pause and breathe to change from my chest voice to my head voice, can't do those seamless transitions like you ;w;
Any tips on improving mixed range and smoother transitions also? Thanks Jasmine <3

1. Your voice is a bit soft comparing to the instrumental, I suggest you to increase your voice since I can’t really hear you, especially at the beginning, and also in the chorus where there are lots of harmonies and overlapping voices.
2. Your pronunciation sounds a bit lazy to me :P Since you didn’t manage to bring out the words by pronouncing the first initial consonant of a word for example: Dong Jie Xiang Rong Pi so it seems that the words are not too clear.
3. 1:34 – 1:37 Wrong phrasing!!! You breathed at the wrong position and the phrase is cut. I suggest you to only breath once, after我only, but not after過.
4. You should be able to realize that you usually get off pitch at the end of a phrase due to the fact that you have no breath anymore. I suggest you to learn how to maintain your breath during a phrase, breath deeply, as low as the position of the diaphragm, try not to place your placement too forward, sing on your breath. Then, you will find yourself able to maintain your pitch accuracy till the end.
5. 3:00 – 3:20 you were a bit rush here and your voice is a little bit quicker then the instrumental and the harmonies.
6. You usually get off pitch at 疲倦 and probably you find difficulties switching from falsettos to real tone. You either have to practice the switching and look for your suitable way of doing it, using falsettos all way through, or using your real tone all way through.
7. The different track of harmonies at 3:51 – 4:00 is doubled rite? I’d prefer it in a single track only. Since your melody is already doubled, it sounds quite messy when there are lots of track playing at the same time (Melody X2, Harmonies X1, different track of harmonies X2). And it can also be lowered since it’s a bit loud.
8. You were TOO CALM!!!!! And no obvious dynamic change and emotion building were shown. I suggest you to make some difference (pitch? Rhythm?) at the later parts since the song keeps repeating and it would be fun if there are some adlibs/changes at the back as surprises to the audiences!!!

hmmm.... I think you'd better expand your vocal range since this cansolve your problems.

For breathing excercises, you should practise deep breathing everyday. Not the kind that you take a deep breath and go expanding your lungs. Lungs are not the place where the connection takes place, but the diaphragm. Put your hand on your tummy, around the position of your belly button, breath out everything from you untill you feel you need air and take a deep breath. Expand your tummy(the inside), and you should feel air is withdrawn automatically if you are relaxed. That's the correct way of breathing.

For expanding your vocal range, sing scales going up and down till your limit if you have time(everyday). And youu'll find improvements very soon!!!! :D

- The harmonies sound…. A bit weird :P I don’t think you got the correct chords. It should be the 1st and the 5th of the chord rite???

Cos you usually miss out the 'h' in 'sh' 'ch' etc :) and Thats what Taiwanese does. The proper putonghua of 窗口 is 'chuang kou' but Taiwanese pronounce it as 'cuang kou'. ;)
For harmonies, look for the chord. and usually we assum the melody as the 3rd of the chord, so the lower melody should be the root of the chord, and the high harmony should be the 5th of the chord. Just transpose the melody line into 3 semi tones higher/lower. That's the easiest way of finding the harmonies. And sometimes we use the fifth seven but its harder, so maybe after you get familiar with the first step, just come and look for me and I'll tell you more k ???;)))

Yes I understand :) but the problem is pp who discovered my centre first (like you and Min) posted too much and if I work by sequence then the others will not have a chance to receive my comment. That's why I am trying to go through a cover of each person and then the covers of those who posted a lot :) I'm going to comment on you and min's other covers now ;) no worries :)

Oh actually Jasmine, just critique 小小 only, I'm going to be switching Perfect Crime with a new cover I'll be releasing shortly, and I'd rather get feedback on the new cover ^^;;
