Professionals are questioning some pointers made in Jolin Tsai's new diet book.
Pop diva Jolin Tsai recently produced a diet book which has been selling very well in Singapore. Some bookstores have even run out of stocks on the popular book.
However, doctors and nutritionists are questioning some rather unorthodox pointers made in the book.
These are some of the odd pointers stated and comments by professionals, including a doctor, a Chinese physician and nutritionists:
1. Avoid eating the leaves of vegetables as they have little benefit for the body. Instead, go for its stem, flower and fruit.
Professionals say: Different parts of vegetables contain different kinds of nutrients. No part is better than others. Vegetable leaves are rich in chlorophyll, fibre and other nutrients.
2. Don't cook meat for more than 15 minutes to ensure that its proteins remain as "good proteins".
Professionals say: There are no "good" or "bad" proteins. Cooking only changes the taste and texture of food but not its nutritional value.
3. The amount of water you should drink a day is your body weight multiplied by 35ml.
Professionals say: This gauge does not apply to everyone, especially children, elderly, and people who are too thin or who are sick. For example, a baby that weighs 6kg cannot have only 210ml of water.
4. Drinking cold water makes you fat. The cold contracts your blood vessels and slows your metabolism. Waste stays in your body and makes you bloated and fat.
Professionals say: There is some basis that lower temperatures may slow down blood flow and affect metabolism, but there is no basis that drinking cold water will make you fat.
5. Sit on the front 1/3 of your chair to get a pert butt.
Professionals say: A good posture is important no matter how you sit. There is however, little basis that it will result in a pert butt.
