| Had been toying around w the idea of getting a decent mic, but $'s a constraint. :/
How come there isn't a phone mic option? :P Most of my friends actually use their iphones to record for me and the recordings actually sound quite good~ |

| More than one mic here, so I can't really vote. It depends on the song situation. ^^;;
USB mic: doesn't get used much, but is best for songs where I need strong highs (very weak mids, non existent lows without EQ intervention). It gives my voice a raspy quality (good for high layered harmonies), so it works for raps as well if I decide to switch.
inbuilt laptop mic: decent highs, strong mids and lows. Good for harmonies where my lyrics and enunciation doesn't need to be very strong.
wired mic: good highs, mids, and okay lows. I use this the most. It's not as smooth in quality as the inbuilt, but it's not raspy/wispy like the USB. Has good balance and never needs EQ intervention.
Webcam mic: I'm starting to experiment with this. It's like the wired mic and has good balance, but is louder than the wired, so I'll have to play with the dynamics to prevent clipping and distortion.
Sony Walkman mic: one of my mp3 players has a built in mic. Doesn't record the best quality mp3s (160kbps) and is very sensitive (once used it to record a lecture and it caught everything: every cough, paper shuffle, outside noise, everything). It's fine if I want to record something quick and untimed (balanced like the wired), but I would have to listen to the song separate on my computer or my second mp3 player. Used sparingly because of the sensitivity and limited space I currently have (only 238Mbs left, I think). |

Technically, what I'm about to suggest is a webcam, but it comes with a mic built in that's pretty good in terms of quality. You don't have to use the webcam itself to have access to the mic. You just have to set your daw to use the webcam instead of the pc mic. Logitech Quickcam E2500 is what I use. It's outdated (XP/Vista compatible), but it works in Windows 7 and 8 (32 and 64 bit). http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=m570.l3201&_nkw=logitech+quickcam+e2500&_sacat=0 It's not expensive. I don't think I spent more than $20 getting it from Walmart, but I don't recall the exact price. |

Thank-you for your advice. I've decided to buy the snowball. xP I think I'll buy it from eBay since it's more convenient but hopefully I'll have it soon. ~~ I'm excited now xD Been meaning to buy a decent microphone for the past 2 years. :3 |

| So the type I use I would say is both a karaoke mic and a usb one. The one I use comes from my PlayStation 2 American Idol game. I tried asking for another mic, but....I got First Act USB mic. I don't like First Act because of the fact that whenever I plug it, the sounds from the PC all get muted as I record. If I want to use someone's YouTube video that has an instrumental in it, (that I asked and got permission to use, but they don't have a download link) I can not record with the YouTube instrumental video in the background. Though, First Act does have some sort of mixing program which I didn't really play around a lot because I found it to be a bit overwhelming due not really knowing much about mixing.
As for the American Idol mic, I like it because whenever I plug it in the sounds are not muted. Taking the previous YouTube statement, the exact opposite happens when I use American Idol microphone I can record with a YouTube instrumental video in the background~ |
